Resident Spotlight: Barbara

Our biography sketch this month is our newest member, Barbara, who is settling in nicely and very thankful to be with us.

I was born in Jackson, Mississippi but moved to Cape Cod when I was three years old. I have a twin sister who is still very close to me and lives on the Cape. I also have two half brothers. My family lived in Brewster, and I went to middle school in Nauset which has a regional school. I then went to the Cape Cod Tech in Harwich where I started in Child Care for one year, then switched to Health Care. I became pregnant while in high school and when I graduated, I took care of my son and raised him with the help of my sister and mother. My mother is now 89 and still lives in Brewster.

I first started drinking when I was fifteen but not during my pregnancies. One of my sons is thirty and lives in Marstons Mills. My other son was killed at sixteen in a four wheeler accident. Prior to his dying I was eight years sober.

I was devastated by our losing him and started drinking again. It was out of control, and I went into hospitals and detox places. My sister finally sectioned me. Eventually I ended up at Emerson House, and they really helped me. It was structured and they had meetings.

I plan to attend AA meetings here at noon at a nearby church. I’ve been two weeks here and feel so welcomed. The manager helps me, and I’m so comfortable here. I am grateful that Homeless not Hopeless took me in.
